Brian Lee Hanson, a homeschool graduate, has played the piano for twelve years and has studied privately with Mrs. Mary Lynn Van Gelderen, Mrs. Yunhua Lovell, and the late Mr. Donald Walker, former head of the piano department at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He currently studies privately with Mr. David Lehman, head of the piano pedagogy department of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. Mr. Hanson, a senior at BJU, is pursuing the Bachelors of Music Degree in Piano Performance and will be graduating in May 2004.

In 1996, he won third place in the Houston Music Teachers’ Association Annual Piano Concerto Competition in Texas. The following year, he received second place in the same annual event. Also in 1997, Mr. Hanson won first place in the Annual Brook Mays Junior Piano Contest in Houston, Texas. In March 2002, he performed in a guest master-class with Andrzej Dutkiewicz, piano professor in Poland, at Bob Jones University. Furthermore, he has twice been a semi-finalist in the Annual Commencement Piano Contest at Bob Jones University.  In addition, Mr. Hanson has been extensively involved in the music ministry of his local churches for the past eight years. He has regularly played offertories and accompanied soloists, and has served as the congregational pianist.

From 1997 to 1999, he was the music director of the Patch the Pirate Children’s Club and Choir at Tri-County Baptist Church in Katy, Texas. From 2001 to 2002, he was the music director of his literary society at Bob Jones University.  For the past three years, he has studied privately with Mrs. Joan Pinkston in hymn-playing and sacred composition at Bob Jones University and is presently studying with her. Mr. Hanson is an active composer and arranger of sacred music, specifically, in the genres of solo piano arrangements and choral compositions/arrangements. He presently is a member of the college choir at Faith Baptist Church in Taylors, South Carolina and is also a member of that church’s adult choir.
